Top Tips to Prevent Breakage

Curly hair is naturally more fragile because its shape makes it harder for moisture and oils to travel down the strand. Dryness, friction, and tension can lead to breakage, so here are our top tips to keep curls strong!

Pre-Treat

A pre‑treatment is a targeted product applied to dry or wet hair before shampooing that acts as a protective barrier around each strand, cushioning them from the friction and water exposure that can weaken hair when it’s wet. Emollience™ Pre-Treatment is a must-have for breakage-prone hair.  It supports a healthy lipid balance, which is essential for the elasticity that allows curls to withstand stress without snapping.

Cleanse

Use sulfate‑free shampoos like Get Clean!™ No Foam Shampoo or Curl Basics™ Shampoo to cleanse without stripping moisture. Focus on the scalp and let the lather rinse through the lengths to avoid over‑handling.  Get Clean's creamy formulation can be used to detangle while you cleanse.  This is our Creative Team's go-to for delicate and tangle-prone curls.

Treat

Leave-in treatments like Hydrofuse™ help build long-lasting hydration pathways and restore the hair's ability to retain moisture for softer, activated curls. Consistent moisture is one of the most important factors in preventing breakage, especially for textured and curly hair, which is naturally more prone to dryness.

Deep Condition

Intense Quench Deep Conditioner™ helps sustain and soften brittle curls for extended moisture retention. Deep conditioning regularly replenishes essential moisture and nutrients that dry, fragile strands need to stay strong and resilient. When curls are properly hydrated, they are more elastic and less likely to snap during detangling, styling, or everyday manipulation. For an added boost, use with gentle heat to help the conditioner penetrate more effectively, maximizing moisture absorption and helping reduce dryness-related breakage over time.

Heat Protection

Excessive heat can strip moisture from the hair shaft, making curls more prone to dryness, brittleness, and breakage. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant and keep temperatures as low as possible to help preserve the hair's natural strength and elasticity. Lower heat settings reduce the risk of weakening the curl pattern, preventing damage and helping curls remain healthy.

Nighttime Care

Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, bonnet, or scarf to reduce friction and help preserve your hair's natural moisture balance overnight. Unlike cotton fabrics, which can absorb moisture and create friction against the hair cuticle, satin and silk allow curls to glide smoothly as you move during sleep. This helps minimize tangles, frizz, and mechanical stress that can lead to breakage.

Regular Trims

Trimming split ends prevents damage from traveling upward and supports healthy growth. Make sure to visit your favorite curl specialist to get your ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

Small changes make a big difference! These habits will help your curls stay strong, moisturized, and breakage‑free.
